Feldenkrais® | Awareness Through Movement | Functional Integration

Having one’s head cradled is such a primal feeling. When was the last time someone held your head in their hands? For most people, it’s when their mother was still caring for them. If you are fortunate, perhaps someone lovingly supported the back of your neck while you kissed. One of my Feldenkrais teachers says that “the mere sensation of someone supporting you is already something.” When you give me your trust for an hour, we both get that sensation… that something.

About the Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais® Method of somatic education uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of living the life they want. You can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. Since how you move is how you move through life, these improvements will often enhance your thinking, emotional regulation, and problem-solving capabilities.

The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. Moshe Feldenkrais said, “We move according to our perceived self-image.” By expanding your perception and increasing awareness, you will become more aware of your habits and tensions and develop new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity, the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently, and comfortably.

You can experience the Feldenkrais Method in two ways. Awareness Through Movement® ATMTM) lessons are taught in a group or one on one setting, with students following the verbal instructions of the teacher. ATM lessons are provided by Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioners(TM), Certified Feldenkrais ATM Teachers(TM) and authorized trainees. Functional Integration® (FITM)(FI®)sessions are one on one lessons where the fully clothed student is guided through touch, movement and verbal instruction. FI lessons are provided by Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioners.

Is Feldenkrais “woo”?

When I was a ballet dancer, I thought that yoga was “woo”. Later in life when I started practicing yoga, I thought Pilates was weird. Eventually I got into Pilates and I heard about Reiki and I thought that sounded ridiculous.

If you had told me 10 years ago that I would spend four years studying to be a Feldenkrais practitioner, I would have looked at you as if you had two heads. So I don’t call anything “woo” any more.

Where you stand depends on where you sit, as the saying goes. The Feldenkrais Method was developed by a physicist, and it’s worked for me, so I’m equally satisfied both that it is science and that it doesn’t matter.

About Me

I spent my life in pursuit of adventure, dance, music, and continuing education.

In 2020, a severe trauma left me physically depleted and emotionally disconnected. When asked how I felt, I had no idea. I realized I had spent years viewing my body as a vehicle for my mind - not as an imperative partner.

To rebuild, I experimented with somatic healing, individual and group therapy, EMDR, retreats, meditation, Intensive Outpatient Programs, peer support groups, yoga, and anything else I could find. Finally, I did a free online Awareness Through Movement lesson given by an apprentice teacher. The method uses gentle, exploratory movement to retrain the nervous system and restore ease, coordination, and self-awareness. After two lessons, I knew that this could bring my mind and my body back together to heal.

The impact was clear enough that I chose to study Feldenkrais so that I could offer to people navigating trauma, addiction, and the general fallout of living in today’s world. I set aside my plan to return to university. In August 2026, I will graduate from the Feldenkrais Institute of Ann Arbor four-year, 800+ hour program as a certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. The training focuses on neuromuscular learning, movement science, and hands-on practice.

Until my graduation, I am offering individual lessons at no cost as I build experience and refine my skills. My background in ballet, ballroom dance, Argentine tango, piano, flute, cello, yoga, racquet sports, and weightlifting gives me a broad understanding of how people move and the unique physical challenges they face.

I invite you to discover how refreshing it can be to move gently... without striving.

Client Testimonials

Spending a beautiful hour on Miranda’s table made me realize how unsafe I feel in my life. She made me aware of the amount of tension I was carrying in my jaw and now I pay attention to it so that I can change my habit.

~Barb

I went to one of Miranda’s Functional Integration lessons to satisfy my curiosity, and then I went back two more times because she made sure I was still curious! Then I sent three of my counselling clients to experience her caring hands.

~Tammy

I cried all the way home. I realized it had been a long time since I felt safe touch.

~Jessica
